Why You Can’t Rely On Your Body To Help You Lose WeightAug 07, 2021
The human body truly is amazing with all that it does and all that it is capable of.
And at the helm of this amazing body is an even more amazing brain; the central control unit that orchestrates every move you make and every action you take. It really is quite marvellous. Especially since it does most of this without you even having to think about or tell it to.
When it comes to overeating, or eating more than you need, this action is also driven by your brain. Your brain literally tells you what to do and how to do it all day long. Including what, when and how much to eat. And it gets its direction from the thoughts you think - both consciously and unconsciously - your neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in your brain) and your hormones (chemical messengers in your body.)
Now before you get furious at your brain for doing this, you need to know that this is how its designed. Humans have been on this planet for hundreds of thousands of years and this is how our ancestors survived. That’s how we have evolved until now. Through the brain telling you to eat more and more when food was available (feasting) and by the body being efficient at storing fat so you could survive through famine times. So your amazing brain and body are just doing what they’ve evolved to do – their job.
However this survival instinct is literally killing us in this day and age. Our hunger signals are confused, telling us we’re hungry a lot of the time and to eat more than we actually need. Especially since there doesn't seem to be any famine time on the horizon. Quite the opposite in fact as food is getting easier and easier to access.
It’s become normal for people to eat large amounts at meal times and snack in between on easy to consume energy dense stuff in packets. Often with no consideration as to whether they're actually hungry or not. It's more because they want to or due to FOMO. No wonder as a race we’re putting on weight faster than ever.
Then when people want to lose weight, they use the only means they know how. They go on a diet.
They decide to take over control of their body's evolutionary functions.
As you can likely imagine, most people end up caught in a cycle of trying really hard to avoid eating food their body desperately and continuously wants. They may even do really well for some time. However, usually the urges eventually become too intense and they end up going off the diet.
A lot of people throw their hands up in the air in complete frustration because they just can’t do it anymore and consider themselves resigned to a life of being overweight. But this needn't be the case.
Overeating is simply the symptom of being overweight. There is no point in trying to control this through following a diet or fasting regime. It makes better sense to understand what’s truly going on and solve for that. And that’s what I do with my clients.
Given that your brain controls everything, it makes sense that is where you must start. Not go on yet another diet. You can’t solve being overweight long-term if you don’t find out what is truly causing it; if you don't get to the bottom of what's really going on. And that's what coaching does. It helps you access the root cause.
It's by no means a quick fix, but once you do this work, you will be able to rely on your body’s wisdom to know when to eat, when to stop and then go about your day without another thought of food.
You’ll also be able to find your body’s natural weight and stay there. For good!
