Why I Became A Life Coach

I’ve always questioned whether diets actually work.

As a child I watched my mother diet over many years without any real success. As a teenager when I thought I had a weight problem I tried dieting which only made me feel crazy around food, eat more and actually gain weight. I soon gave that away. Then as a newbie dietitian I would hear the same story over and over from clients. Dieting over many, many years had ultimately caused them to gain rather than lose weight. At their first visit with me, they would usually report being at their heaviest weight. Not to mention the effect this had on their self esteem and self confidence.

So I started searching for the answers. I trained in health coaching, eating psychology and hypnotherapy. I read books on the brain and the power of the mind. Listened to TED talks, podcasts and anything else I could get my hands on. I loved learning all of this amazing information and lapped it all up hungrily. But it wasn’t until I found life coaching that I knew I finally had the tools to truly help my clients with lasting change.

You see, one of things that distinguishes humans from other animal species is our ability to observe our own thinking. Our thoughts underpin who we are, what we do and the results we have in our lives. Having the ability to choose our thinking is a human 'super power.' Yet most people aren’t aware of their thoughts, let alone know how to change their thinking to proactively help them become more of who they want to be.

In life coaching we use a framework called The Model and it really can help you solve any problem. You can use it to understand why you feel the way you do, why you do the things you do (or don’t do the things you want to do) and how you have created the outcomes or current results you have in your life. I use it with my clients to help them make sense of why they overeat and help them find solutions to eat the way they want to, more easily.

It's a gamechanger. When they learn how to use this powerful tool, my clients are able to fast-track their ability to create a better relationship with food, themselves and lose weight for good. It really does help them become the person they want to be around food.

Our brains tell us things. They just do. The difference is whether you take that on as the truth and act in that way or whether you're able to see them as just thoughts.

If you’re not in the right headspace, your thinking will continue to go down the toilet and your actions will follow suit. You’re not going to feel motivated, excited, determined or want to do the things that will help you create what you want. Including getting the body you want.
